Detective Inspector John Cahill Police Procedural Novels
BOOK # 1: THE DEADLY STEPS
Hi, as we approach the middle of January I am in the process of launching the first book in the D.I John Cahill series.
The first book in this series in THE DEADLY STEPS. The Deadly Steps is set mostly in Cork City, Ireland. The protagonist, Detective Inspector John Cahill is an unlikely protagonist. In fact he is not even a member of the Garda Siochana, (the Irish National Police).
John Cahill and his wife, Jules, are natives of Cork City. They were very happy with their life, training a small string of racehorses on the beaches of Inchydoney, near Clonakilty. Until John suffered severe injuries from a fall at Down Royal Racecourse in Northern Ireland. After a long recovery John's career in horseracing is over. He is encouraged by a close friend, whom he met in hospital, to join the Royal Ulster Constabulary. After some deep thought and many arguments, the Cahill's move to Belfast and John joins the R.U.C.
As the R.U.C. morphs into the Police Service of Northern Ireland and John evolves with the organization. He becomes a successful investigator and is eventually promoted to Detective Inspector. John is transferred to the Internal Investigation Unit of the P.S.N.I and after two high-profile investigations he has made himself unpopular with several high-ranking officers.
The Assistant Chief Constable steps in and offers John and Jules a chance to escape and take a secondment to the Republic to work with the Garda, running an integrated Fugitive Squad.
John and Jules move back to Cork, where he successfully runs the Integrated Fugitive Squad, until a young woman is murdered in Blackpool, at the foot of the steps at Fever Hospital Hill and Leitrim Street. There are no suspects and no witnesses! In fact, the victim is not identified.
This is where the author leads the reader into the somewhat unknown world of physical and electronic surveillance. John O'Donovan expertly introduces suspects and describes how the police embark on identifying those responsible. The author then describes in great but simple detail how a wire-tap investigation unfolds.
If you like True Crime, you will love this story. This novel is not the typical police mystery. In fact, it is not a mystery. The author tells the reader who is responsible for the murder, early on in the book. This story, then lays out exactly how a complex investigation runs from start to finish.
